They are beautiful because they are so easy. But that doesn't mean that the ease is what should be canonized.
Wegman amazes me because he came out of this stoned-with-a-betamax milleu and has remained, as other artists of this genre have not, in the world of small-scale video production. And while you can say that most of these artists are making much, much more accessible work than they were in the seventies: Acconci's architecture adventures; Oppenheim's new career as a plaza artist; Eleanor Antin's rich tableaux; Nauman kinda putting whatever in a gallery and selling it for big bucks...
...you don't see anyone else actively working to enrich the genre of small-time introspective video the way Wegman is. I think there's something great about the way Wegman is still chipping away at the same project that he started in the seventies.
